Built by 100 German masons over 6 years, the 9,300 square foot Castle is constructed of local silica sandstone, painstakingly brought to the property by horse and wagon in the Gilded Age. The Castle has been modernized over the years while retaining its classic charm, including a lavish ballroom complete with two stone fireplaces and Grand Staircase. With a dungeon tucked into a secret passageway, griffins providing stony vigilance, steep topography maximizing natural defense, and a turreted rooftop with battlements and a spectacular view, the Castle hearkens back to European traditions.

A Historic Step Forward: Morgan County Invests in the Castle's Future!

A Historic Step Forward: Morgan County Invests in the Castle's Future!
The Berkeley Springs Caste's roof going through a dark era...we've made progress since then but still have more to do!

We are thrilled and deeply grateful to share some fantastic news: The Morgan County Commission has awarded the Berkeley Springs Castle a $10,000 grant from the county’s Hotel/Motel Tax fund!

This investment is a monumental vote of confidence in our mission and a crucial step toward solving the most pressing issue facing our beloved Castle: the deteriorating roof.

What This Grant Means:

This generous funding represents a quarter of what we need to complete the full roof repair project. It allows us to move forward with confidence, knowing our community leaders believe in preserving this iconic piece of Morgan County history. The County Commission’s support ensures that the Castle will continue to be a place for educational tours, free community days, and historic celebrations for years to come.

The Path Ahead:

This generous grant from the County provides a foundational piece of the funding puzzle for the roof restoration. We are continuing to actively pursue additional grants and funding opportunities to secure the full amount needed for the project.

The Commission’s decision to act now is a huge show of faith. It means we can begin finalizing plans with our contractors and be ready to start work the moment our full funding is secured. This critical investment puts us in the best possible position to act quickly and protect the Castle from further damage.

A Heartfelt Thank You:

This would not have happened without you. Every person who has volunteered, visited, shared our story, or voiced their support to local leaders helped make this case. You showed how much the Castle means to our community.

We are especially thankful to the Morgan County Commission for their visionary commitment to preserving local history and for their trust in our all-volunteer foundation to be good stewards of these funds.

This isn't the final chapter, but it is one of the most important ones. We are now closer than ever to achieving our goal. Thank you for being on this journey with us. We will keep you updated every step of the way!

With sincere gratitude,

The Volunteers & Board of the Berkeley Castle Foundation
